Das Tor Hyehwamun befindet sich im Nordosten von Hanyang (ursprünglicher Name von Seoul) und war eines der vier kleinen Tore, die Teil der früheren Stadtmauer waren. Das Tor wurde 1396 gebaut und trug damals den Namen Honghwamun. Allerdings wurde das Ost-Tor des Schlosses Changgyeonggung, das im Jahre 1483 gebaut, wurde ebenfalls so genannt. Um Verwechselungen zu vermeiden, nannte man es deswegen im Jahre 1511 Hyehwamun um. Es ist aber auch unter dem Namen Dongsomun bekannt, was so viel bedeutet wie „kleines Ost-Tor”.

Hyehwamun war früher sehr wichtig für alle in den Norden Reisende, da das Nord-Tor Sukjeongmun sehr oft geschlossen war. Hyehwamun wurde leider während der Kolonialzeit Japans für den Bau einer Straßenbahnlinie zerstört. Das heutige Tor ist eine Replikation, die im Jahre 1992 gebaut wurde.
