The Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival is a hands-on prehistoric culture festival held at the Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site in Yeoncheon, where some of the earliest humans on the Korean Peninsula once lived. The site is world-renowned for the discovery of Acheulean hand axes, evidence that highly advanced Paleolithic people inhabited Korea some 300,000 years ago. Once a year, Jeongok-ri becomes a gathering place for prehistoric cultures from around the world, inviting modern visitors to step into the world of early human life through a wide range of immersive experiences. This practice of over 400 years originated from the Siege of Jinju in 1592. The festival begins at sunset when lanterns of various shapes and sizes are lit on the Namgang River. World Pungmul lanterns, wish lanterns, traditional lanterns, religious lanterns, and customized lanterns embroider the night with colorful lights. Fireworks and lighting shows are held against the backdrop of this beautiful night view, along with various cultural shows. The festival operates food trucks where visitors can enjoy delicious foods from around the world. ◎ The Siege of Jinju and YudeungDuring the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, yudeung (oil lanterns) were lit in the battle at Jinjuseong Fortress to stop the Japanese army from crossing the Namgang River. The lanterns were also used as a means of contacting families outside the fortress.

The Hadong Wild Tea Cultural Festival is held every May in Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea’s first tea cultivation site. Designated by the government as an Honorary Cultural Tourism Festival, the festival celebrates Hadong’s wild tea, long renowned for its rich flavor and aroma and grown in the area’s pristine natural environment. Since hosting the Hadong World Tea Expo in 2023, Hadong has strengthened its identity as a “tea wellness culture city” and continued to enhance the value of its tea industry and culture. In 2026, the festival marks its 29th edition. Visit Hadong in May, when the landscape is at its freshest and greenest, and enjoy music and art programs such as “Busking in a Teacup” and “Melody on Tea Leaves,” along with healing programs including tea classes, book talks, and walks along the Horibyeong Byeolcheonji Trail. Here, a single cup of tea can turn an ordinary day into something special while allowing visitors experience the full flavor and charm of Hadong. This year, the festival will also feature a variety of Children’s Day programs for the whole family on May 5.
