Daejeon is a city that offers a wide range of cultural and artistic activities, along with an efficient and comprehensive transportation network. The city is home to a number of major cultural facilities, including the Daejeon Museum of Art, the Daejeon Arts Center, the Lee Ungno Museum, and the Daejeon Yeonjeong Korean Traditional Music Center, which are located around the Hanbat Arboretum, the largest urban green space in the country. With these cultural facilities located around the city, it's an ideal place to enjoy art and nature together.
Among these institutions, the Daejeon Yeonjeong Korean Traditional Music Center, established in 1981, is the first local government-affiliated gugak performance venue in Korea. It is taking the lead in systematically conserving and advancing traditional Korean music and dance. The Daejeon Yeonjeong Korean Traditional Music Group is composed of an orchestra, vocal ensemble, and dance troupe and offers a creative reinterpretation of diverse elements of traditional art forms, including court music, folk dance, and the gugak orchestra music. This approach aims to evoke a profound emotional response in the audience.
The representative permanent performance, Saturday Gugak Show is held on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month and presents a variety of stages, encompassing court music and modern creative gugak. In particular, it sets interesting themes such as "The Beauty of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity," "Carrying Filial Piety," and "Autumn Gugak" These themes facilitate an accessible and enjoyable exploration of the multifaceted charms of gugak for audiences.
