Hyunudon (현우동)

Hyunudon is a specialty udon restaurant and noodle factory near Sinsa Station, led by Chef Park Sanghyun, renowned for his mastery of udon. The restaurant gained fame for its deep-fried dish and cold udon with bonito soy sauce, showcased as a delicious dish on various TV programs. Their main offerings include mentaiko ankake tamagotoji udon (pollack roe and egg udon) and tempura bukkake udon (cold udon with bonito soy sauce). Additionally, popular choices include curry deopbap (curry with rice), ebiten mochi bukkake udon (deep-fried shrimp, rice cake and cold udon with bonito soy sauce), toriten bukkake udon (deep-fried chicken drumsticks and cold udon with bonito soy sauce), and tenzaru udon (tempura and zaru udon).

Seoul Hyochang Park (서울 효창공원)

Hyochang Park covers 122,245 square meters spanning across Hyochang-dong and Cheongpa 2-dong. It is a historic landmark that once contained several royal tombs, and was known at that time as Hyochangwon. The cemeteries that were originally located in Hyochangwon belonged to Crown Prince Munhyo, King Jeongjo’s first son who died at the age of five; Royal Noble Consort Uibin of the Seong Clan, King Jeongjo’s royal concubine and Crown Prince Munhyo’s mother; Royal Noble Consort Sugui of the Park Clan, King Sunjo’s royal concubine; and her daughter Princess Yeongon. The royal tombs were moved to Seooreung Tombs in the waning months of the Japanese colonial period. The Japanese empire began the development of Hyochangwon into a park in 1924, and the Japanese governor-general officially assigned the site as a park in 1940.

Presently, several of Korea’s greatest leaders are buried in Hyochang Park. The remains mostly belong to independence activists including Yoon Bong-gil, Lee Bong-chang, and Baek Jeong-gi, whose graves are collectively known as Samuisa Tomb. A statue of Lee Bong-chang has been built in the graveyard. Among the other patriotic martyrs who are interred in the park are Kim Gu and some of the key figures of the provisional government such as Lee Dong-nyeong, Cha I-seok, and Cho Seong-hwan. An ancestral shrine named Uiyeolsa has been built along the main gate and holds the portraits of the deceased independence activists.

Myeongdong Yeongyang Center specializes in roasted chicken and ginseng chicken soup. The jeongi gui tongdak (rotisserie chicken) is light and juicy with just the right amount of fat, and the crispy skin is excellent. The vinegar-marinated radishes are a must-have side dish. Samgye tang (ginseng chicken soup) is also the signature dish of the restaurant. The lunch special, Tongdak set menu (Roasted chicken set menu), features roasted chicken, chicken soup, nutritional bread, and vegetables, offering a satisfying ensemble.

Jingogae is a standing store that opened its doors in 1963. Its signature dish is the eobok jaengban (boiled meat slices hot pot), where thick slices of meat are stacked along with vegetables, mandu, rice cakes, and eggs, all boiled together. In addition to this, they also serve dishes such as gejang jeongsik (marinated crab set menu), gopchang jeongol (small intestine hot pot), galbitang (galbi soup), and yukgaejang (spicy beef soup). The spicy and richly seasoned yangnyeom gejang (spicy marinated crab) is also a popular menu item, which when paired with rice, enhances its flavors even further.
