Algunos sostienen que el nombre del templo proviene de la unión de las palabras su (agua) y jong (campana).

Hay otra leyenda sobre el origen del templo. Cuando el rey Sejo (1417-1468) estaba regresando de una visita al monte Geumgangsan, se quedó una noche en esta región y por la noche escuchó unas misteriosas campanadas. A la mañana siguiente, les pidió a sus cortesanos que buscaran la fuente del ruido tintineante, pero estos solo encontraron una cueva y estimaron que el ruido provenía de las gotas de caían filtrándose por el techo de la cueva. Además, encontraron 18 estatuillas de Buda enterradas allí. Para conmemorar este descubrimiento, el rey ordenó que se levantara el templo.
