Al Parque Nacional del Monte Odaesan se le otorgó la categoría de Parque Nacional en el año 1975. El nombre de estas montañas tiene origen en su conformación de 5 mesetas: Manwoldae, Jangnyeongdae, Girindae, Sangsamdae y Jigongdae.

Teniendo al pico Birobong de 1563 m de altitud como pico principal, las montañas se extienden hacia el sudoeste con el monte Sodaesan, el pico Horyeongbong y el monte Sogyebangsan. El lado este se halla unida a los picos Sangwangbong y Durobong, cuyas alturas superan los 1.000 metros. El templo más representativo es Woljeongsa, que fue llamado así por el hecho de que la luna llena que se alza sobre Manwoldae (monte Dongdaesan), es particularmente brillante. En este templo se preservan la famosa Pagoda Octogonal de 9 niveles (Tesoro Nacional) y la Estatua de Piedra del Buda Sentado (Tesoro Nacional). También, el palacio Jeogmyeolbogung de Woljeongsa es donde el monje Jajang preservó los nobles restos del Sakyamuni. Dentro del templo Woljeongsa, ascendiendo 5 km hacia el este por el sendero de los abetos se llega a Sagoji donde se erige el templo Yeonggamsa.

Asimismo, el Parque Nacional del Monte Odaesan conservan el recurso forestal natural más grande de Corea. Viven en él numerosos animales y plantas silvestres. El área del pico Birobong es famosa por los bosques de nuncheukbaek y tejo. Desde el pico Durobong hasta el pico Sangwangbong florecen la azalea real y geumgang chorong (campánulas en ramo), por lo que es famosa la región y en ella residen animales tales como verracos, almizcleros, palomas comunes y pájaros carpinteros coloridos.
