Autrefois connu sous le nom du temple de Gyeonseongsa, le temple Bongeunsa fut construit durant la 10ème année de règne du roi Weongseong du royaume Shilla (794).
En 1498, la reine Jeonghyeon a remis à neuf le temple Gyeonseongsa, situé à l’est du mausolée du roi Seongjong et la renommé Bongeunsa. A l’origine, le temple se trouvait près du mausolée royal (à 1km, au Sud-Ouest), mais le temple fut déplacé, à l’endroit qu’il occupe actuellement, pendant le règne du roi Myeongjong du royaume Joseon. 3 479 planches de bois de 13 sutras bouddhiques, incluant le travail du calligraphe Kim Jeong-Hee sont gardés ici. La cérémonie bouddhiste appelée Jeongdaebulsa, a lieu tous les ans, le 9 septembre du calendrier lunaire. Durant cette cérémonie, les moines portent les écritures à leur front et récitent les Beopseongge (rites bouddhistes).
