Seoul Silver Grass Festival takes place at Haneul Park. Originally a garbage dump, the land was reformed and transformed into the vibrant, healthy ecosystem it has today in large part thanks to the planting of silver grass. The park now features the largest colony of silver grass found in Seoul, and hosts the Seoul Silver Grass Festival every year in October when the grass is in bloom.

In Korea, finding an unobstructed horizon is a rarity, making Gimje’s expansive horizon a unique and stunning sight. Held in the autumn when the fields are tinged with gold, the Gimje Horizon Festival celebrates this unique landscape. The festival aims to promote Gimje’s famous rice and preserve traditional agricultural culture based on the theme of, “where the land meets the sky.” The torch parade at night is the highlight of the festival. The spectacular performance in front of the huge twin dragon sculptures standing at the center of the Byeokgolje Reservoir (Historic Site No. 111) perfectly captures the festival’s vibrant and passionate atmosphere. Throughout the festival venue, there are farming activities, such as harvesting rice and threshing, as well as rural experiences of the past, such as catching grasshoppers and riding an ox cart. 

◎ Byeokgolje Reservoir 
Built during the Baekje period, the manmade reservoir shows the wisdom of Korea’s ancestors and the old agricultural system. On the embankment more than 3 kilometers long, five floodgates were installed to discharge water into the rice fields.

Yangyang Salmon Festival is a festival celebrating one of Yangyang’s specialties, salmon. The festival is held in mid-October each year, at Namdaecheon Stream, Yangyang. Namdaecheon Stream sees the greatest salmon run in Korea, hosting more than 70% of the salmon returning to Korea. Salmon born in Namdaecheon Stream grow for 3 to 5 years in the North Pacific, and return to Namdaecheon Stream in fall through the East Sea to lay eggs and face the end of their lives. Yangyang Salmon Festival joins these fish in their powerful, vigorous display of life as they return to their native river. The festival starts with Yongwangje, a traditional rite, and offers a bevy of experience programs, including the most famous program of salmon hand-catching. Seeing the salmon drifting and darting between one’s hands is certainly an experience that can only be had in very few places around the world. Salmon ecology experience offers an interesting insight into the growth and movement of salmon, and other activities like salmon tasting, salmon rubbing, and salmon ecology exhibitions keep the spirit of the festival alive.

Gwangju Royal Ceramic Festival is held annually in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do where royal ceramic was first created during Joseon dynasty. The festival first took place in 1998, and offers various programs such as performances, exhibitions, and hands-on activities. With a performance-centered opening ceremony, it is expected to boost the ambience with varied performances, traditional music, dance and living statue.
