12-17, Gukdang 2-gil, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do

This hanok (traditional Korean house) guesthouse is located right across from the Five Royal Tombs in Gyeongju. Because there are no obstructions on the way, the guesthouse enjoys a remarkable view of the ancient city. Located about 2.5 km from Gyeongju Intercity Bus Termina and about 2 km from Gyeongju Historic Areas, this guesthouse has a dignified yet comfortable atmosphere.
It is run by a mother-and-daughter team, whose attention to detail and care can be felt tangibly in the comfortably furnished rooms: well-maintained lawn and trees, double doors that help to prevent drafts and noises, and clean white bedding appreciated by many visitors. Rooms with ondol (under-the-floor heating system) are ideal for two. From walls covered by traditional Korean paper to clean and comfortable bedding, the room exudes comfort. A raised floor space in front of the room is a great place to see the scenery and a great place for photography.
Another strength of Gyeongju Oreung Hanok guesthouse is its accessibility. Hwangnidan-gil Street, a bustling street full of restaurants and cafes, is only a 15-min walk away, while Gyeongju’s famous sights such as Cheomseongdae Observatory, Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Complex, Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, and Gyeongju National Museum are only a 10-min drive away.

Daemyeongheon House is a modern hanok building integrating elements of European architecture. Its interior features design that cannot be found in traditional hanok, such as English herringbone-style floorboards and stained glasses. The kitchen has a well-preserved domestic furnace and items in the style of 1930s, exemplifying the unique atmosphere of this modern hanok. Daemyeongheon is also famous for its connection to Kim Gu (pen-name: Baekbeom), a prominent independence activist: When Kim fled to Ganghwado Island about a hundred years ago, Daemyeongheon was the place he stayed for about three months, and also a place where he presided over a village school. Traces of Kim’s stay can still be found in the building.
Daemyeongheon House is made up of three buildings of the main building, a detached building, and an annex. The area that the guests stay in is the annex. The annex has three rooms, a central wooden-floored hall (daecheong), raised floor (numaru), balcony (jjongmaru), and kitchen. The restroom, which is also fitted with a shower booth, is located outside the building. Since reservations are offered to only one group per day, visitors have the house to themselves during their stay. Because of the building’s unique characteristics, guests are prohibited from cooking indoors; instead, guests are provided with a complimentary breakfast, such as bread, tea, coffee, and fruit.
Paid programs on site include tea ceremony, azalea craft on traditional Korean paper, retro-style clothing rental, and photography. Guided tours are offered twice per day at 14:00 and 16:00. The tour takes about 0.5–1 hr and requires a fee of KRW 10,000 (including tea). However, visitors should check the date before their visit, as the guided tour is not available when there are any guests staying in the house.

Oryuheon House, located near Imhaho Lake in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, offers a chance to stay in a historic house from the Joseon period. The house, also known as Mogwa House, was built by Kim Won-jung, the third son of Sukjong-era rector of the National Academy Kim Bang-geol, when he formed a family of his own in 1678. It was designated as the National Folk Cultural Heritage No. 184. The door’s wooden frame and the open floor space exemplify the beauty of the literati house of the Joseon period, while the sarangchae (men’s quarters) and daemunchae (gate quarters) showcase the sophisticated architecture of the era. Anchae (women’s quarters) retains its original appearance, while the sarangchae was rebuilt in 1920. The construction of the Imha Dam in 1990 resulted in the house’s relocation to its present location. The owner of the house resides in anchae and sarangchae. Guests have access to a space that includes a 2-kan room, which can accommodate up to 4, an open floor space, and a bathroom. Cooking is prohibited in the house, but guests can make use of a grill located on a small yard reserved for the guests. Korean-style breakfast, including menus like chicken porridge or lotus leaf rice, are offered free of charge in the morning. Nearby sights include the water sports activities in Imhaho Lake, Manhyujeong Pavilion, Hahoe Village, and Dosanseowon Confucian Academy.

The name “3917 Majung” refers to its goal of “welcoming (majung) the modern culture of Naju in 1939 anew in the year 2017.” Spread out on a wide land area of 13,223 m2 are four buildings of Nanpajeong, Sarangchae, Mokseowon, and Siseoheon. All buildings take after the unique combination of Japanese- and Western-style housing commonly seen in the late Korean Empire period.

There are two ondol (under-the-floor heating system) rooms in total, separated by a central wooden-floor hall (daecheong), one supporting 3 to 4 guests, one ideal for 2 to 3 guests. The restroom, which is also fitted with a shower booth, is located outside the building.
Eunhaengmok Room 1 and 2, which are housed in the Sarangchae building, are tatami rooms with balcony. Sarangchae’s shower and restroom is located in the building. Mokseowon is likewise made up of three tatami rooms, separated by open floor space and an attic. The shower and restroom is located outside the building. Siseoheon houses a 4-person room and the largest room in the complex, capable of supporting more than 10 guests. There are 2 restrooms and 2 restrooms with shower facilities, making the building ideal for group events.
