The Gwanghwado and Incheon areas are known for their plentiful catches of baendaengi (large-eyed herring). After a little street started specializing in serving baendaengi some 30 years ago, the fish has continued to grow in popularity.

Located in Guwol-dong, across from the Incheon Culture & Arts Center, Baendaengi Street has expanded, and so has the variety of dishes served. Visitors can try baendaengi prepared sashimi-style, roasted, or in a spicy soup. For this particular species of herring, locals believe the flavor is best in March and April when they grow to their largest size. Salted Baendaengi also makes an excellent side-dish for Korean meals.

* Baendaengi is one of many types of small prey fish referred to as ‘Soeo’ for their fierce struggle in fishing nets. Soeo have internal organs that are proportionally smaller than other species of fish and are known for their feisty nature. These attributes are thought to signify a stress-filled life, which is why many Koreans refer to narrow-minded or hot-tempered people as ‘baendaengi.’

Baedari Secondhand Bookstore Alley (배다리 헌책방 골목)

Baedaeri Secondhand Bookstore Alley is a representative location of Incheon's past and the life of people living here. The street is home to five bookstores that sell books on every topic, from art and music to traditional medicine, children's literature, and dictionaries. The entrance to the alley also features murals of life in the past. Recently, the street was used as a filming location for the drama "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016)," making it an extremely popular spot to visit.

Yeonan Pier is the starting point for all coastal passenger ships bound for the numerous islands in the western sea. The nearby Incheon Fish Market is always bustling with people who come to buy fresh fish and pickled fish at reasonable prices. Also located near the pier is the sliced raw fish market operated by the Marine Products Association. The southern quay is where boats and ships leave for sea fishing. The cultivation of Ganghwa ginseng began during the era of King Gojong (A.D. 1232) of the Goryeo dynasty. In 1920, Ganghwado Island was designated a special district for ginseng cultivation. At the onset of the Korean War (1950-1953), the people of Gaeseong, the birthplace of ginseng cultivation, took refuge on Ganghwado Island and began to cultivate ginseng on a large scale, which was the beginning of the production of the famous 6-year-old root of ginseng.

Ganghwado Island has the optimal environment for ginseng cultivation with clay soil, sandy loam, and a cool climate condition influenced by coastal winds. The thick root of Ganghwa ginseng does not have any inside cavity or white interior. Historical background: The Unyang-dong part of Modamsan Mountain where Gimpo Art Village is located is speculated to be the origin of the ancient country of Baekje. Seated before broad plains and Najincheon Stream, the art village also sits in front of Modamsan, the home of numerous Mahan tombs from which a 120-centimeter-long steel sword, crystal jade, and golden earrings, the oldest of its kind unearthed thus far, were once discovered. There have also been many discoveries of settlements from the New Stone Age and Bronze Age as well as dolmens from the Bronze Age so it is believed that a group with a powerful authority had been living in the Modamsan area since ancient times. In the Joseon period, the area became a part of Cheonhyeon-ri and Cheongsudong-ri, Seokhan-myeon. Modamsan is the home of the shrine and grave of Sim Ong, a military vassal from the early Joseon Dynasty who was a second-level meritorious vassal and had the positions of General Jeolchung and later Yeonguijeong, which was given after his death. Also located on the northern riverside of Hangang is Gambawi Rock where Jungbong Jo Heon, a civil vassal from the mid-Joseon period and leader of a righteous army, used to fish to soothe his patriotic sentiments.

The Gimpo Tea Etiquette Museum is a private museum where visitors can learn about the history of Korea’s tea culture, dado, meaning tea ceremony in Korea.
