The World Human Rights Cities Forum (WHRCF) is held as an annual event in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, to realize the vision of becoming a human rights city since 2011. The Forum has become a gathering place to share the spirit of justice and community, the same values under which the citizens of Gwangju resisted the ruthless oppression of the then-military regime in May 1980. Within the WHRCF participants exchange experiences on challenges and achieved success in human rights especially at the local level while expanding their own scope of understanding. Now, the Forum has become a major human rights event and distinctive platform for sharing and networking amongst human rights cities, human rights organizations, activists, and miscellaneous stakeholders in the area of human rights. Located in Gwangju, the Namdo Folk Food Exhibition Room was established to preserve and promote the local foods of the Namdo region. The museum has a museum shop, both permanent exhibitions and special planned exhibitions, and a studio where visitors can watch a variety of video content related to the local foods. In the Honam Cultural Material Pavilion, literature, clothing, and artwork from the region are on display.

The museum building was designed to resemble both the long, rectangular presses used to make patterned rice cakes and the Ipseokdae Rock of Mudeungsan Mountain, a symbol of Gwangju. Even the colors of the building’s walls hold special significance. The obangsaek (five colors; blue, white, red, black, and yellow) symbolize the cardinal directions, the seasons, the major organs in the body, different tastes, feelings, and philosophy.

Jusangjeolli Cliff of Mudeungsan Mountain (무등산 주상절리대)

The Jueangjeolli cliffs are rock pillars of various hexagonal shapes that seem as if they were hand carved. The Jusangjeolli cliffs of Mudeungsan Mountain consist of Seoseokdae, Ipseokdae, and Gyubong Rocks formed about 70 million years ago. Ipseokdae and Gyubong Rocks are both of a distinct pillar shape as they have been heavily weathered, and Seoseokdae, which was less weathered, looks like a folding screen. The Neodeolgeong (cluster of rocks), which sit on the mountain slope, were made when stone pillars collapsed. The standing rocks and Neodolgeong have been designated as Natural Monuments due to their rarity and uniqueness.

The Yeongsangang River Bike Road, stretching 133 kilometers along the Yeongsangang River in Gwangju, offers a scenic route. It winds past notable landmarks including the Seungchonbo Reservoir, Najudaegyo Bridge, Yeongsanpo Port, Hwangpo sailboat, Natural Dyeing Culture Center, and Naru Village. Along the path, riders can enjoy five of the most picturesque spots in Yeongsan. The starting point of the route, the Yeongsangang River Bike Road Information Center, provides free bicycle rentals and bike safety training.
