The Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX) was established on September 7, 1988 as a large-scale business town for domestic and overseas businessmen. Business operations can be managed easily as assembly halls, exhibition halls, the Korean City Air Terminal, InterContinental Hotel, and Hyundai Department Store are gathered in one spot.

A 57-story building contains 20 trade organizations including the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), as well as 250 companies and financial institutions. Convention and Exhibition, which houses three specialized exhibition halls and permanent exhibition halls, is composed of a four-story main building and three-story extension.

An underground passageway connects COEX Mall, completed in 2000, and Bongeunsa Temple to the north with Samseong Station (Seoul Subway Line 2). Additional facilities for culture, pleasure, and shopping make COEX a must-visit attraction.

Yeonmujang-gil in Seongsu-dong, known for old factories and a shoe workshop street, has been reborn as a place of trendy cafes and culture. The energy of car repair shops, printing factories, and handmade shoes street still exist today but, as global restaurant brands, select shops, and cafes have set up amidst busily operating factories, an atmosphere unique to Seongsu-dong has been created. "Daerim Warehouse" led to the change in the Seongsu-dong streets and can be said to be the originator of all warehouse-style cafes that are popular throughout Cafe Street today. The red-brick structure, antique signboards, and a vast indoor space of an old warehouse have been maintained and, with the addition of a sensuous interior design, it has become a space suitable for fashion shows and exhibits, thus showing new potential for old Seongsu-dong architecture. Seoul Book Fair first started as International Book Exhibition in 1954 and was recognized as an international book fair by the International Publishers Association in 1995. The book fair is held annually at COEX, aiming to promote Korean publications abroad, strengthen competitiveness of the publishing industry, promote reading among the public, and allow the public to enjoy diverse cultures through literature.
