As the nation began to recover from the aftermath of the Korean War, farmers from the northern Gyeonggi-do region and Ganwon-do gathered around the old Seongdong Station (renamed ‘Hansol Donguibogam’) to sell their produce and wares. With the recent remodeling of the market, including the long-neglected Gyeongdong Theater, the place feels totally renewed and full of energy. Restored Gyeongdong Market space and the 5th community store for a win-win relationship with local economy

This 5th Starbucks Community Store is housed in a restored theater in Gyeongdong Market. The store has a win-win agreement with local merchants. Starbucks created a multiple cultural space in collaboration with LG Electronics such as LG Gold Star Radio Refresh Center. Every week, local artists and college students present culture and art performances on the stage that recreated the theatre concept. To offer a special experience suitable to an old theater, Starbucks developed the Retro Theater-like CND. For differentiated customer experiences, the store sells store-baked crafted food and exclusive merchandise.

Opened in 1998, Chojun Textile & Quilt Art Museum is the only textile art museum in Korea. Visiotrs can learn about the excellence and tradition of Korean textiles by observing a wide range of domestic and international textile artworks. In addition to exhibiting its collection, the museum also holds special exhibitions as well as textile and quilt competitions, giving visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with textile artworks.

Sungnyemun Gate (숭례문)

Sungnyemun Gate is Korea’s National Treasure No. 1, and its unofficial name is Namdaemun Gate. Sungnyemun Gate is the largest castle gate stone structure with an arched entrance in the middle. There’s a column on top of a platform, raising the roof, distinguishing the upper stories and lower stories of the building. Passageways for traffic are located at the east and west ends of the gate. Different from the other gates, Sungnyemun Gate’s tablet has its name written vertically.

On February 10, 2008, Sungnyemun was destroyed by fire. After a 5-year reconstruction work, the gate was re-opened to the public again on May 4, 2013.
