Built in October 1973, Soyang Dam is the largest dam in Korea. It stands 123 meters high and 530 meters long and can hold up to 29 million tons of water. The stored water which has become Soyangho Lake, is Korea's largest man-made lake, spanning a large area that borders the Gangwon-do cities and districts of Chuncheon, Hongcheon, Yanggu, and Inje. Visitors can enjoy riding a ferry or walking on the 2.5-kilometer walking trail. Various restaurants and attractions are also nearby.

Soyangho Lake was created by the building of Soyang Dam in 1973. Soyangho Lake is famous for catching freshwater fish, such as trout, carp, smelt, and eel. The waterway stretches all the way to Inje, with beautiful scenic views. Water sports can be enjoyed from the dock near Soyang Dam, with boat rides to Cheongpyeongsa Temple as well as around the lake. Many cafes and restaurants are located around the lake, making it a great vacation spot.

A recreational forest established at the foot of Yonghwasan Mountain (878 m) in Sabuk-myeon, Chuncheon Yonghwasan Mountain has been selected one of the best 100 mountains in Korea by the Korea Forest Service and is well-known for the TV program in which BTS members climbed it in 2020. Yonghwasan Recreational Forest is home to needle leaf trees and broadleaf trees, such as pine, oak, birch, and larch, and has a clean atmosphere of the natural environment along with the clear valley. It is equipped with various convenient facilities, such as accommodation, campground, hiking road, trail, and forest park amid healing nature. Yonghwasan Recreational Forest is ideal for not only camping and hiking but also forest leisure and sports activities. It runs Forest Experience Center, which is an indoor forest leisure and sports activity facility that can be used regardless of the weather and season. It provides various experience activities, such as Vertical Slide where visitors will experience falling straight down, Zip Zag where visitors wearing safety equipment will experience a zipline-type ride along the railway, Rope Adventure where visitors will complete a course of a rope and a suspension bridge, and Design Rock Climbing consisting of various difficulty levels. In the open air, there are leisure and sports facilities, such as Artificial Rock Climbing Site, Flying Squirrel (Quick Jump), and Flying in the Forest (Zipline). Chuncheon Cheongpyeongsa Temple (청평사 (춘천))

Cheongpyeongsa Temple is a Buddhist temple with 1,000 years of tradition, located at Obongsan Mountain. Originally established as Baegamseonwon Temple in 973, the temple changed its name several times, went through construction works, and has become the current Cheongpyeongsa Temple. Yi Ja-hyeon, a scholar of the Goryeo period, built a garden here by keeping its natural topography after he left his government post. In this area, there is a pond that was built during the Goryeo period and has preserved its original form. Many cultural heritages have disappeared over the years and during the Korean War as well. The remaining cultural heritages include Hoejeonmun Gate of Cheongpyeongsa Temple (Treasure No. 164), Three-story Stone Pagoda of Cheongpyeongsa Temple (Gangwon-do Cultural Heritage Material No. 8), and Stupa of Yi Ja-hyeon (posthumous epithet: Jillakgong). Cheongpyeongsa Temple’s Hoejeonmun Gate was built instead of Sacheonwangmun Gate (the gate of the Four Guardian Kings) to enlighten people about the transmigration of souls. Cheongpyeongsa Temple bears a myth about a princess and a serpent. The princess suffered a lot from a serpent as she couldn’t get rid of it from her body. Then she came to Cheongpyeongsa Temple and prayed to the Buddha, and she became free from the serpent. Therefore, the Three-story Stone Pagoda of Cheongpyeongsa Temple is also called “Princess Pagoda.” Although the scale of the temple is not large, it is known for its beautiful natural landscape harmonized with artificial structures, such as a pavilion and a pond. Accordingly, the temple area was designated as Scenic Site No. 70. Cheongpyeongsa Temple can also be reached by taking a ferry at the Soyanggang Dam Quay.

The Literary Village of Kim You Jeong (김유정문학촌)

The Literary Village of Kim You Jeong was established on the site of the birth home of Kim, in order to commemorate Kim You-jeong who left various great short story novels of Korea’s modern times, such as Spring, Spring (1935), and Camellia Flower (1936). It was opened in 2002, consisting of the Birth Home of Kim You-jeong, Memorial Hall, foot-operated mortar, etc. Then, in 2016, various facilities, such as Kim You-jeong’s Story House, outdoor stage, experience room, and Nangman Nuri were additionally built across the Literary Village of Kim You-jeong. The current birth home with the square-shaped structure, which is the typical hanok (traditional Korean house) style, was restored according to historical research by Kim’s relatives and students. The Memorial Hall provides information and displays artifacts related to Kim You-jeong’s life and works. Kim You-jeong’s Story House shows three-dimensional exhibits and videos related to his works and life. Various sculptures made with the themes of Kim’s short story novels are placed throughout its outside area. It is recommended to walk along the Sille Story Road after visiting the Literary Village. The Sille Story Road is a trail, which is a literature tour, consisting of the places that appeared in Kim’s novels with the background of his hometown.

Gangchon Rail Park (Gimyujeong Railbike) (강촌레일파크 (김유정레일바이크))

After Gyeongchun Subway Line opened, the old train tracks turned into a rail bike park. Gangchon Rail Park starts next to Gimyujeong Station and offers various attractions including large book photo zone, café, zipwire and more. The total course of the rail bike is 8.5 kilometers long with 6 kilometers on rail bike and last 2.5 kilometers on a train. Most of the track is downhill for an easy ride with a beautiful view of mountains, fields, and a river. With an additional fee, visitors can enjoy the VR experience section of the ride. After riding the final section on a train along the Bukhangang River, riders will take the shuttle bus back to the original location. There are also a 7.2-kilometer-long Gyeonggang Railbike that starts from Gyeonggang Station at a separate charge.

Deungseon Falls (Samaksan Mountain) (등선폭포(삼악산))

Samaksan Mountain in Chuncheon is known for many waterfalls in different sizes along the gorge, and especially Deungseon Falls is the best known to tourists. By entering the hiking trail of the falls, you will encounter a narrow and deep gorge. Formed through quartzitic jointing, the gorge has a mysterious atmosphere with its strange rocks and bizarre stones, which look sharp and precipitous. As the gorge and falls keep their cool temperature, the area is a popular summer resort. Deungseon Falls is one of the Eight Sights of Deungseon, along with Seunghak Falls, Baengnyeon Falls, and Biryong Falls. The quickest way to get to Deungseon Falls starts from the Deungseon Falls Ticket Booth, which is close to Gangchon.
