Yeongnam Alps is formed by mountains with an elevation of over 1,000 meters centered on Gajisan Mountain, which spans Ulsan, Miryang, Yangsan, Cheongdo and Gyeongju, boasting beautiful terrains and landscape. Its name originated from how it is comparable to the beauty and grandeur of the Alps in Europe.

The total area of Yeongnam Alps is around 255 ㎢, and it is a mountain tourist attraction connected by nine mountains including Sinbulsan, one of the 100 greatest mountains of Korea. Though its beauty is famous regardless of the season, it is completely covered with silver grass every fall to boast a fantastic view, attracting countless hikers from all over the country.

Gorgeous nature is not the only aspect luring people to Yeongnam Alps; there are also many things to enjoy, from mountain biking (MTB), that fearlessly runs through the mountain trails, valleys, gravel roads and bushes to paragliding by which you get a complete panoramic view of the Yeongnam Alps. The region currently looks to establish the Sky Silver Grass Trail, which aims to utilize existing trails to the greatest extent possible, and to restore silver grass colonies, and it also hosts low-carbon sports events such as the Yeongnam Alps Marathon and MTB Challenge Competition.

Yeongnam Alps is the common name for seven mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level located in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan; Sinnae-myeon, Miryang-si, Gyeongsangnam-do; and Unmun-myeon, Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It was named “Yeongnam Alps” because it is as beautiful as the Alps in Europe. The Yeongnam Alps Complex Welcome Center is the starting point of a trip to the Yeongnam Alps and a complex cultural space. In addition to beautiful natural scenery, it has various facilities such as the Alps Cinema, Bungaeman Center, Climbing Center, and Culture Center, providing many things to see and enjoy for tourists. A 3-5 minute walk away is Sinbulsan Hongyupokpo Falls so that you can enjoy the coolness of its beautiful clear water.

Situated on the outskirts of Sinbulsan Mountain (part of the Yeongnam mountain range, in southeastern Korea), Deungeok Hot Springs (72,727m²) is a sprawling geothermal site which includes the Sinbulsan, Eonyang, and Gajisan Hot Springs. Nearby to the Sinbulsan, Gajisan, and Ganwolsan Mountains of the Yeongnam mountain range, the complex is ideal for visitors seeking rest and relaxation after their hiking adventures.

The water found in the area contains high concentrations of sodium bicarbonate (substance similar to baking soda), which is believed to be a remedy for dermatitis, indigestion, bronchitis, high blood pressure, and many other ailments. Nearby attractions include Amethyst Cavern Park, Dokkaebi Road, Jakcheonjeong, Ganwol Natural Recreation Forest, and Seongnamsa Temple.

Located in Gajisan Provincial Park, Yeongchuksan Mountain has an elevation of 1,059 meters. The name of the mountain “Yeongchuk” is known to have originated from the name of a mountain in the ancient kingdom of Magadha in central India. The mountain is also called Chwiseosan and has such beautiful scenery that it is often referred to as the Alps of Yeongnam. The broad valley that extends at the foot of Yeongchuksan Mountain provides a great walk to the hermitages scattered around the famous Tongdosa Temple.

Yeongchuksan Mountain is considered the best of the eight beautiful places in Yangsan City. The other seven places are Cheonseogsan Mountain, Naewonsagyegok Valley, Hongnyongpokpo Falls, Baenaegol Valley, Cheontaesan Mountain, Imgyeongdae Terrace on Obongsan Mountain, and Tapgol Recreational Forest on Daeunsan Mountain.

Dodong Sanbang is a restaurant with five separate traditional Korean buildings situated on a large plot of land. It serves great traditional Korean set meals, and has a separate tea room where customers can enjoy a cup of tea after dining. Excluding winter, the restaurant offers a special program called “tteok mechigi” (rice cake pounding) where customers are invited to pound (or make) a rice cake with a mallet and eat it. The restaurant also includes a traditional souvenir shop and rice cake shop, and offers cultural programs.

Amethyst Cavern Park is the largest man-made cave tourist attraction in Korea, where one of the five jewels of the World, amethyst, was mined. Connected like a labyrinth, the cave is 2.5 kilometers long and fills an area of approximately 15,000 square meters. The average temperature is between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius year round. Visitors can take either the walking tour that goes through a different themed halls or take a boat ride through the cave river. On the second floor of the cave, visitors can see Jurassic World filled with different dinosaurs and character lamps.

Situated close to Cheongdo Station, Cheongdo Chamhanwoo Meat Restaurant is renowned for its expertise in beef dishes. Its signature offering is the hanu special (Korean beef special), a delightful combination that includes galbitsal (grilled boneless galbi) and salchisal (chuck flap tail). The fresh meat is expertly grilled on a stone plate, enhancing its flavors. Pairing it with myeonginamul (a salad made with victory onion sourced from Ulleungdo Island) adds a unique and rich taste to the meal. Other highly recommended dishes at the restaurant are kkotdeungsim (ribeye) and yukhoe (beef tartare).

Jogeummaru is a duck specialty restaurant that exclusively utilizes domestically-raised ducks in its culinary creations. The ducks are raised with sulfur, contributing to a clean and rich flavor profile, free from undesirable odors. The signature menu features ori yangnyeom bulgogi (duck bulgogi), ori tang (duck soup), and ori sutbul gui (charcoal-grilled duck). Ori yangnyeom bulgogi entails duck marinated in a spicy seasoning, grilled on a pan with added chives. Ori tang is a meticulously prepared broth cooked for 12 hours, incorporating various vegetables. Additionally, eomnamu ori baeksuk (whole duck soup with castor aralia) offers a unique dish where duck is boiled with medicinal herbs.

Located on the slopes of Namsan Mountain, the Cheongdo Hanok School is an educational center for carpenters who specialize in hanok (traditional Korean architecture).

Hanok buildings hold cultural and historical values and the school has been gaining in popularity not only among carpenters, but also those who are interested in enjoying and upholding Korea's proud architectural history. The entrance of the school is marked with a large traditional "Neowa" (a house roofed with thick, unfinished shingles of pine) that immediately catches the eye.

The school provides three types of courses. There is a basic carpentry course to teach people how to make wooden objects and structures, a course to nurture professional carpenters, and a course to teach carpenters how to build Hanok. The school’s hands-on programs offer visitors a chance to make a traditional Korean window and to saw and plane wood. There are cultural programs for children as well. Children, along with their parents, can make rice cake by pounding rice with a large hammer, bake sweet potatoes, or join a seminar on traditional Korean houses. The cultural programs change with each season.

Galbi Gurakbu specializes in Eonyang bulgogi (Eonyang-style bulgogi), exclusively using the highest-grade female Korean beef. Eonyang bulgogi involves finely minced beef, generously seasoned, and grilled wide and flat on a gridiron. The mild seasoning ensures a pleasant texture without being overly stimulating. The restaurant boasts other excellent dishes, including siraegi doenjang jjigae (dried radish leaf soybean paste jjigae), so deungsim gui (grilled beef sirloin), yukhoe (beef tartare), and sogalbisal (grilled boneless galbi). Conveniently located, just a 5-minute taxi ride from KTX Ulsan Station.
