Surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses, called hanok, that date back to the Joseon dynasty. The name Bukchon, which literally translates to "northern village," came about as the neighborhood lies north of two significant Seoul landmarks, Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno. Today, many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture. As Bukchon Hanok Village is an actual neighborhood with people's homes, visitors are advised to be respectful at all times while looking around.

Jongno Cheonggye Special Tourist Zone stretches from Seorin-dong to Changsin-dong between Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jong-ro. The Eight Scenic Views of Bukchon can be found at the Bukchon Hanok Village between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. Bukchon was historically a district where the aristocracy of Joseon had resided in, so it is still home to a large number of traditional dwellings, called hanok in Korean. Munmyo is a shrine dedicated to Confucius, whose teachings form the foundation of Confucianism. It is also dedicated to his disciples and other great Confucian scholars. Munmyo is not only the shrine but also the highest educational institution of the Joseon dynasty. Munmyo was once called as Munseonwangmyo since during the Tang dynasty, Confucius was named as King Munseon after his death and then it has been called as Munmyo since the Yuan dynasty.

The compound consists of two main areas: the Daeseongjeon houses shrines and the Myeongnyundang features seminar halls and other auxiliary facilities. Also, there are two dormitories, Dongjae and Seojae, which are collectively known as Sungkyunkwan. In front of the Myeongnyundang stands a ginkgo tree designated as Natural Monument No. 59. In spring and autumn, a ritual for Confucius and his disciples takes place.

The museum consists of exhibition zones, an event space, video room, shop and more to display King Sejong’s scientific, artistic, military, and political contributions, including the theory of Minbon, which recognized the people as the base of politics. King Sejong, the 4th king of the Joseon dynasty (1397-1450, reigning from 1418-1450) was responsible for some of the most brilliant achievements in the history of Korea, including the creation of Hangeul (Korean alphabet) and great advancements in the areas of science, culture, art and politics.
