También conocido con los nombres de monte Seolsan o monte Seolbongsan, estas cadenas montañosas fueron denominadas Seoraksan porque las tempranas nevadas que caen sobre ellas no se derriten por largos períodos y sus rocas son blancas como la nieve.

En noviembre de 1965, el distrito del monte Seoraksan fue designado área de preservación de Monumento Natural. Más tarde, en diciembre de 1973, la misma región fue designada área de Preservación de Parques; y en agosto de 1982, la Unesco la catalogó de Distrito de Preservación de la Biosfera. Este parque nacional abarca 4 ciudades y distritos regionales, los cuales son: Sokcho, Inje, Goseong y Yangyang. Con su mayor pico, el Daecheongbong, como referencia, las cadenas montañosas se dividen en dos sectores, Oeseorak hacia el este y Naeseorak al oeste.

Oeseorak alberga cascadas de grandes dimensiones como las Biryong, las Oryeon y las Towangseong. También se destacan algunas formaciones rocosas como la roca Ulsanbawi y la cueva Geumgang. La región cuenta con diferentes instalaciones que facilitan la visita, ya que este parque nacional es muy frecuentado por montañistas locales y extranjeros. Algunos de los senderos más famosos son la Ruta Boseondae-Madeungryeong y la Biseondae-Chenbuldong-Daecheongbong.
