Lo que hoy en día se conoce como el área de cines de Nampo-dong se estableció luego de la liberación de Corea el 15 de agosto de 1945, que es cuando se fundaron varios cines en la calle de Nampo-dong. La denominación actual, Plaza BIFF, se acuñó el 14 de agosto de 1996, cuando se celebró el primer festival cinematográfico en Busan. Con su desarrollo en el sector de la industria cinematográfica, y los esfuerzos que se entablaron para ubicarlo como un destino turístico cultural, ha logrado que se posicione como un nuevo destino turístico y cultural a nivel internacional. La carretera que comienza desde el antiguo cine Buyeong de Nampo-dong hasta el puente de Chungmu-dong, con 428 m de largo, es reconocida hoy en día como el “Camino de las Estrellas” y el “Camino del Festival de Cine”. En especial, a víspera del festival cinematográfico, en cada año, se celebra en estas calles el evento de huellas de la mano de las estrellas famosas, y el encendido de las luces con flores, entre otros acontecimientos que dan la apertura del festival. Es el único en el mundo que posee la concentración de cines que estrenan las películas del festival, por lo tanto, su potencial de crecimiento es enorme. Es más, últimamente también es visitado por cantidad de jóvenes y turistas, ya que el lugar se está convirtiendo en un complejo cultural de entretenimiento y de compras.
