Le site historique de Hangpaduri est l'endroit où le bataillon militaire Sambyeolcho de la dynastie Goryeo résista jusqu'au bout aux invasions mongoles. Le site possède une salle d'exposition, un monument et une forteresse de boue unique. A proximité se trouve la source Jangsumul (jangsu signifie général) dont on disait que l'eau s'écoulait des pas du général Kim Tong-jeong. De nos jours, l'eau de la source ne peut pas être utilisée comme eau de boisson.

Sambyeolcho était une unité militaire de la dynastie Goryeo. Quand Goryeo parvint à un accord de paix avec les forces mongoles en février 1270 (11ème année du règne de King Wonjong), l'unité spéciale de défense Sambyeolcho s'y opposa et entra en résistance. Ils établirent leur base sur Jindo dans le Jeollanam-do mais après avoir essuyé un large revers, ils déménagèrent cette fois sur l'île de Jéju et construisirent la forteresse Hangpaduseong. Ils continuèrent le combat contre les forces mongoles pendant encore 2 ans depuis cet endroit. Cependant, le bataillon complet fut anéanti en avril 1273 (la 14ème année du règne du roi Wonjong).

Ce mouvement d'indépendance anti-mongol donna naissance au final à un profond sentiment patriotique de protection de la nation des invasions étrangères. En 1977, le gouvernement investit 745 millions de wons pour restaurer une partie de la forteresse et construire un monument à la mémoire des victimes de cette guerre. Celui-ci fut achevé en juin 1978.
