La résidence du missionnaire Wilson est une bâtisse en briques de 2 étages construite en direction de l’est, au pied du mont Yangnimsan. Il s’agit de la plus vieille maison de style occidental à avoir subsisté dans la région de Gwangju. Comme le décrit l’histoire, la résidence fut construite par un missionnaire américain nommé Wilson dans les années 1920, mais la date exacte de construction reste à ce jour inconnue. L’intérieur fut rénové et sert actuellement de bureau à l’église presbytérienne de Corée. Il s’agit d’un élément de culture important pour comprendre l’histoire de l’architecture moderne coréenne.

La bâtisse, de forme carrée, est composée d’un séjour, un salon, une cuisine, une salle de bain au 1er étage et de chambres au 2ème étage. Le sous-sol contient des rangements et une salle de chauffage. La maison donne sur l’est, un choix certainement influencé par le style habituel des maisons de la région. La structure des bâtiments, faite de murs de briques grises d’une épaisseur de 55 mm et d’un intérieur plâtré, est influencée par le style néerlandais. Une fine séparation de briques distingue le 1er et 2ème étage. Le missionnaire Wilson et sa famille habitèrent dans cette maison pendant ses travaux religieux en Corée et la vendirent ensuite à un prix très bas à la condition qu’elle soit utilisée dans un cadre religieux. La maison fut ensuite achetée par l’assemblée générale de l’église presbytérienne Chonnam de Corée en 1986.

Cimetière des missionnaires de Yangnim-dong (양림동 선교사 묘지)

Le cimetière des missionnaires de Yangnim-dong regroupe les tombes de 23 missionnaires ayant apporté le christianisme pour la première fois dans la région de Gwangju mais également crée un mouvement pour sauver la nation du colonialisme japonais. Yangnim-dong, dans la ville de Gwangju, fut le lieu principal où les prêtres Bae Yu-ji et Clement Owen dirigèrent leur travaux religieux en tant que premiers missionnaires de la province du Jeollanam-do.

Le prêtre Bae Yoo-ji fonda l’école de filles Jennie Speer dans le cadre de ses activités de missionnaire. Clement Owen se consacra aux travaux missionnaires et au volontariat médical avec sa femme infirmière. Aujourd’hui, il existe un monument de commémoration en l’honneur du prêtre Bae Yoo-ji et un bâtiment au nom de Clement Owen et son grand-père.
