L’aéroport international de Gimpo, situé à Gangseo-gu, Séoul, était à l’origine une installation militaire de l’armée japonaise. Après que la Corée a regagné son indépendance vis-à-vis du Japon, l’armée de l’air américaine a continué à utiliser l’aéroport jusqu’en 1957. Il a été désigné officiellement aéroport international par mandat présidentiel en 1958, mais a été utilisé comme tel seulement en 1971.

Depuis l’inauguration de l’aéroport international d’Incheon en 2001, l’aéroport international de Gimpo assure surtout les vols intérieurs.
