Als sich das Land nach dem Koreakrieg begann zu erholen, zog es die Bauern aus dem Norden der Provinz Gyeonggi-do und aus der Provinz Gangwon-do in die Umgebung des alten Bahnhofes Seongdong (heute steht an dessen Stelle der Markt "Hansol Donguibogam"), um ihre Erzeugnisse und Waren zu verkaufen. Dieser spontane Austausch auf dem brachliegenden Land führte alsbald zur Herausbildung eines neuen Marktplatzes.
Der Seouler Gyeondong-Markt erstreckt sich auf die Stadtteile Jegi-dong, Yongdu-dong und Jeonnong-dong im Stadtbezirk Dongdaemun-gu und besteht u.a. aus dem Gyeongdong-Markt für östliche Medizin, dem Neuen Gyeongdong-Markt, dem Alten Gyeongdong-Markt, dem Gyeongdong-Gebäude und dem Hansol Doguibogam.
Zurzeit wird vieles auf dem Markt umgebaut, um aus der veralteten Marktumgebung eine erneuerte Shoppingerfahrung zu machen, welche jedoch den ursprünglichen Charme des Ortes zu bewahren vermag.
2004 wurde der Großmarkt Hansol Donguibogam gebaut und dort eröffnet, wo das Midopa-Kaufhaus einst stand. Hanbang-Cheonha, Donguibogam Towertel und weitere Gebäude befinden sich derzeit im Umbau.
