Yeonhwasa Temple is said to have been built by Hong Mun-seop. After having a dream, Hong dug the current site of Yeonhwasa Temple to find two stone Buddha statues and built a temple there. It was designated a traditional temple in 1988. The temple features Muryangsujeon Hall, Samseonggak Hall, and Yosachae (monks’ residence).
There used to be a building with a tile roof, but following the discovery of a stele with the inscription of “Muin Year” and a pedestal, the roof was improved. The side of the stele is in a trapezoid shape with a wider bottom. It is thought to date back to the Unified Silla era. The temple is also home to a stele with seven relief Buddhist images. Together with the stone images of Biamsa and Jeonganmyeon, this stele is considered to have cast a new light on the Ancient Art.

Culture Factory was a tobacco manufacturing factory in Cheongju from 1946 to 2004. A culture-centered urban regeneration project in 2021 turned it into a cultural complex equipped with commercial facilities, cultural experience facilities and crafts cluster. Because it was remodeled from an existing structure, columns, walls, overall frame and chimney, the original tobacco manufacturing facility frame can still be seen. As a notable venue in Cheongju, a city of handicraft, the Culture Factory hosts numerous exhibitions related to crafts. The first floor features restaurants and shopping mall, and the third and fourth floors make up the Korean Craft Museum where you can check out free handicraft exhibitions. Cheongju Open Library and a Kids Cafe located on the fifth floor are popular attractions for families. The performing hall frequently stages a variety of plays and concerts to provide Cheongju citizens with more opportunities to enjoy and appreciate culture.

This attractive cultural space, which contains the modern and contemporary looks of the 1900s, provides various programs such as planned performances and festivals, as well as a space rental.

If you want to enjoy a premium Korean table d’hote experience in Cheongju, Ihak Hanjeongsik is the place to go. One has a choice of floor and table seating here, so visitors can pick the seating that is comfortable to them. Because of its interior design, the restaurant has separate dining rooms, so one can enjoy a meal in peace. The dishes are served in a course, from porridge to seasonal kimchi and salad, seafood, meat, soup, braised dishes (meat or vegetables marinated and braised), and finishing with pot rice. That is the familiar course menu structure found in Korean table d’hote, with kimchi and vegetables served before main dishes made with meat arrive on the table. All dishes tend toward elegance, yet the restaurant does not skimp on the amount of food served, so one can get a filling meal. It is a popular place for locals, especially for family events, so reservations are mandatory.
